ADAM CORBALLY APPREHENDS THIEF ON GLOSSOP OUTDOOR MARKET
Adam Corbally chased after and apprehended a thief on Glossop Outdoor Market today when a trader from the market hall had items of clothing stolen from her stall. As the trader took chase the thief ran from the scene and Adam gave chase and caught him and bought him back to the market. All of the goods were retrieved and returned to their rightful owner. The thief, an elderly gentleman was later spoken to by the police and given a caution.

GREETINGS CARDS ON SALE THIS SATURDAY
Yesterday saw the start of Eva's second week of work experience at Glossop Outdoor Market when she was taken to Manchester to look around the warehouses by one of our traders.
Eva has taken to market trading like a duck to water and last Saturday she had another great day on the market working with various traders and learning new skills. In fact, she has enjoyed herself so much that she is considering becoming a trader herself! To give her more experience at trading and to give her the chance to see how it feels, one of our traders is allowing Eva to completely take over a stall selling a selection of greetings card so that she can put into practice everything that she's learnt. Our thanks also go to High Peak Borough Council who are supplying the stall free of charge.
We hope you'll all come down on Saturday to stock up on greetings cards and give Eva the encouragement she deserves.

EVA'S FIRST DAY OF WORK EXPERIENCE ON GLOSSOP OUTDOOR MARKET
Eva and Brian |
Eva had a great first day of work experience with the traders on Glossop Outdoor market today and soon began serving customers like an old hand. She helped Brian set out his stalls this morning and we have to say we've never seen them looking so good, she even borrowed a pricing gun and priced everything up too! She is such a hard working young lady who's willing to try her hand at anything and we're sure that she's going to be an asset to the market in the 3 weeks that she's with us.

A NEW FACE AND SOME OLD FRIENDS AT YESTERDAYS FARMERS MARKET
Photographer Peter Aitchison bought a fantastic selection of his black and white photographs to the market yesterday. If you liked Peters photographs you may be interested to know that he now runs an "Introduction to Photography" beginners course at the Peoples Gallery in Stalybridge. For more information please email Peter at info@peteraphoto.com. You can also view more of Peters work on his website which can be found here www.peteraphoto.com.

It was lovely to see the return of Julian of Wooden Hearts Woodcraft at the Farmers Market with his large selection of handcrafted wooden items. Julian is a retired pen-pusher who in his own words "now plays with wood" which he says he finds much more creative and satisfying. Julian recycles where possible and all of the wood shavings and sawdust are composted for his garden. If you have any questions or wish to place an order you can contact Julian at julian.birtwell2@tiscali.co.uk. Fans of Julians work will be happy to know that he is considering taking the occasional stall at our regular market too and we'll let you know the dates well in advance.
It was good to see the ladies from Studio Eight Glossop making a return to the market after having been away for a few months. Welcome back ladies. These two very talented ladies sell a selection of handcrafted gift items which are all made by themselves in their studio. If you want to see more of their work you can access their website here www.studioeightglossop.com.

UPDATE ON THE HARLEY JONES FUN RUN LAST SUNDAY IN MANOR PARK
Special guest Harley Jones rode on his grandad’s motor racing scooter to take part in a kids’ fun run. This year’s mile-long children’s run around Manor Park was held in aid of two-year-old Harley, from Tintwistle, who was left severely disabled with meningitis at six weeks old. Glenn Campbell, owner of the Bodycheck health and fitness club on Victoria Street, Glossop has been organising the annual charity runs since 2006. He said: “This year we’ve raised £1,000 just from the entry money and a few bits of sponsorship, that’s before the rest of the sponsorship is counted up. “Harley’s dad rang up just as I was organising the fun run so it’s a coincidence it’s for him but it’s great to help.” Harley’s mum, Hayley, said: “Harley loved it – he was on my dad Dave’s knee. “He’s two on Monday and this will make a nice birthday present. My nephew Louis also took part and all the family were there. I’d like to thank everyone who took part and especially Bodycheck. That’s an amazing sum.” She added that with the £1,000 from the fun run so far, she and husband Chris have raised £7,000. But they need £30,000 to build a downstairs bathroom and bedroom for Harley so he can live as normal a life as possible. Fastest boy and girl in Sunday’s run were 12-year-olds Matthew Strogen and Niamh Simpson, both from Glossop, who completed the route in just under five minutes. All entrants got a goody bag and a medal. Glenn added: “The rain held off for the run and the weather was fantastic – 188 runners took part, all for a good cause. “The kids loved it, they were all smiles.”
MAKE YOUR MONEY GO FURTHER AT GLOSSOP OUTDOOR MARKET
Statistics have shown that you can save up to 33%, that's 33 pence for every pound you spend, by shopping at your local market so save yourselves some money and come and shop with us this Friday and Saturday at Glossop Outdoor Market instead of paying more for the same quality of goods and impersonal service at the big multi-national supermarkets. To the traders on Glossop Outdoor Market our customers are more than just faceless individuals who fills a trolley, queues at a checkout and boosts profits, they're friends who we look forward to seeing every week and we work hard to make sure that they always get value for money and plenty of bargains.
As well as all of our regular traders we will also be joined on Saturday by the casual traders who are here once a month for the Farmers Market giving you even more choice of low cost, high quality goods. Whatever you're looking for, from books to scones, jewellery to fruit and vegetables you'll find it all at our small, friendly market.
THE CUSTOMER ALWAYS COMES FIRST AT GLOSSOP OUTDOOR MARKET
Whilst last Sunday saw the close of the first Love Your Local Market fortnight the traders at Glossop Outdoor Market are hoping to persuade you to love your local market the whole year round by offering you some fantastic bargains available every week. Markets have an important part to play in boosting the local economy and giving the shoppers lower cost goods than those available at the big supermarkets so it makes sense to use them, especially today when the country is in the grips of the worst recession it has experienced since the 1930's.
The traders at Glossop Outdoor Market are experts at finding and selling goods that are high in quality, low in price and excellent value for money. Whatever you are looking for, you can find it at our market and if you can't, then tell us as we are looking for new traders at the moment to fill any gaps that there are in order to offer you, our valued customers, a total shopping experience.
The Glossop Outdoor Market traders committee are working together with High Peak Council to provide Glossop with a market to be proud of and we need your help to do that. Talk to the traders about what you want to see at your market and we can approach the council on your behalf with these ideas.
We are also looking for new traders, especially in the following areas.,
Underwear and Nightwear
Cosmetics and Perfumes
Breads and Bakery Products (conditions apply to the sale of foodstuffs)
Toys and Stationery
Household cleaning products
If you are interested in trading on our friendly market you can find out more details at the High Peak Council website or you can leave a comment on the blog and someone will get back to you.

THINKING ABOUT BECOMING A MARKET TRADER
There are a few things you need to look into if you are considering becoming a Market Trader.
The most important of these is setting yourself up with Public Liability Insurance as you won’t be able to trade unless you have it. You can get this from various companies but most traders use the National Market Traders Federation. You can find them online and once you have paid your yearly premium your insurance cover is instant.
Whilst we’re on the subject of insurance, you will also need to make sure that your car/van is insured for business use. This can usually be added on to your regular insurance for a small premium.
What shall I sell? For a first time trader we would advise you to think very carefully if you are going to sell “perishables”. It takes time to become an established trader on any market and you don’t want to be out of pocket at the end of the day with a lot of stock that is going to perish before you trade again the following week.
Go and visit the market you would like to trade at and have a look around to see what others are selling to make sure that you are not wanting to sell the same items. You will stand a much better chance of succeeding as a Market Trader if you are not duplicating what another trader in the same market is selling. You may, also, not be allowed to trade if you are selling the same thing as someone else.
There are a few things you might want to take into consideration when you choose what to sell.
Will it fit into my car/van?
How heavy is it? Remember, you will have to do an awful lot of loading and unloading in the course of your working day so choose something you know you can handle.
Is there anything else I’ll need?
You will need to have plastic sheeting or tarpaulin to protect your merchandise from the rain/snow. Even though the majority of our market stalls are covered the wind can cause rain or snow to be blown onto the stalls so it is better to take precautions against your valuable stock getting ruined.
As market traders are out in all weathers it makes good sense to equip yourself with warm, waterproof clothing and shoes/boots for the winter months.
Once you’ve taken these things into consideration the next steps are simple:-
Choose a market
Contact it to find out what’s available
Register and apply to be a market trader
Choosing a Market
There are a few things you may want to think about when choosing which market you wish to trade on.
1. Location - do you wish to work close to home or would you like to travel to another location.
2. Trading Days - find out what days the market you are interested in Standing is open - most of our markets trade on Friday and Saturday but some are open on other days too so be sure to choose
One which can offer you the days you want. Trading days will vary throughout the country but most markets are open on a Saturday.
Contacting your chosen market to find out What’s Available
Nearly all markets in the UK can be found online so it should be quite easy to get hold of a contact number for the market of your choice. If you can’t find them on the internet we suggest that you pop along to the market you would like to trade at and talk to one of the traders to find out who you need to contact about having a stall.
Registering and Applying to Become a Market Trader
This is your final step to becoming a Market Trader. Once you have decided upon where you want to trade and spoken to the market manager/superintendent, you will need to fill out the relevant paperwork and hand it back. You will also need to provide them with your insurance details for their records.
This is a leaflet that we put together for our own markets in conjunction with High Peak Council and we hope that you will find this information useful. If you have any questions just leave us a comment and we'll do our best to be of help.

Jean is also looking into having a stall on Glossop Outdoor Market one Friday a month where she will be selling vegetarian pies, quiches and scones so we hope you will all give her lots of custom then too as her produce is absolutely delicious and always leaves us wanting more!

THEFTS AT GLOSSOP MARKET COMPLEX
Three traders in the market complex (Market Hall, Market Arcade and Outdoor Market) have been targeted by a sneak thief in the past two weeks. Could everyone please be on the lookout for a 30ish white male dressed in a green hat and green jacket and alert Glossop Police if you spot him acting suspiciously around the complex. He is targeting personal property and cash and has even been spotted on tape eating food that a trader had left unattended! He may be operating with others who are used to create a diversion whilst he targets traders bags etc.
Please be aware of this situation and don't leave anything of value unattended around your stall or till area and be vigilant for anyone who fits his description.

LAST WEEK OF LOVE YOUR LOCAL MARKET FORTNIGHT
Calling all potential market traders - this is your last chance this year to enjoy the benefits offered under the Love your Local Market Fortnight campaign. Come and join us at Glossop Outdoor Market and try your hand during the 1st National Love your Local Market campaign which runs until 8th July. Buy and try a stall for a tenner and get free insurance cover for the day provided by the National Market Traders Federation.
Glossop Outdoor Market is where Adam Corbally started out at the age of 19 and we are all very proud of what he's achieved with his hard work and positive attitude. Now we're inviting potential traders to come and have a go too, you never know where it will take you. Many multi-national businesses started out as market stalls, Marks and Spencer was just one of them and Lord Sugar stood the markets as a young man too so with the right attitude and determination there is a lot to be said for starting off as a market trader.
To find out more about becoming a trader on Glossop Outdoor Market send an email to
markets@highpeak.gov.uk or visit the High Peak website.
