.Local man, Rod Howat, was so moved by the plight of children in Bosnia and how they had been affected by the after effects of the war that he moved from Glossop to Bosnia 20 years ago in order to help them. Rod has founded Out of the Ashes and has made it his mission in life to bring happiness to the street children and orphans of Tuzla. Every year Rod travels from Bosnia to Glossop, funding his trips from his own pension in order to collect toys and clothing for those children and young people who desperately need his help. As Rod has little money to spare, he often sleeps in his van on these trips and says he has taught himself to sleep sitting up behind his steering wheel!
The traders of Glossop Outdoor Market are full of admiration for what Rod is doing and we are supporting him all the way and we hope you will too. To do this we are collecting toys for Rod to take with him this year so we are asking you to get the kids to have a good sort out and donate any unwanted toys to this good cause. There will be a collecting box on the outdoor market throughout November and the beginning of December for your donations - no money please. The box will be located at Bookworm, the book cabin which is next door to the outside cafe.
