SPEND LESS, WASTE LESS - SHOPPING AT THE MARKET IS GOOD FOR YOUR POCKET

If, like me, you're fed up with wasting food because the supermarket doesn't sell most things in individual portion sizes, the market is an ideal place to shop.  Not only will you be able to buy just as much or as little as you need, you'll also be saving yourself money too.  How many times have you gone to clean out the fridge and ended up throwing away food because there was too much for your needs?

This is where the market comes in.  The supermarkets tend to pack things such as fruit and vegetables in large "bargain" sized quantities.  Tomatoes come at least 6 to the pack, apples come by the kilo, oranges and satsumas come pre-packed in a net, even bananas are wrapped in "value" sized quantities!  This is fine if you are going to eat all of the food before it gets past it's best but not everyone needs or wants to buy so much at once.

I have completely changed my shopping habits because I could be heard complaining loudly to anyone who would listen that supermarkets should cater for the single person and that I was fed up with having to buy far more than I needed.  Now I do all of my fresh food shopping at the market and I couldn't be happier.  I can choose exactly what I want in the quantities that I know I will use and I save money too. Supermarkets look at you as if you've gone crazy if you ask for 2 sausages or 1/4 pound of meat but the butcher on Glossop Indoor Market is more than happy to sell me exactly what I need and he'll also give me his expert advise on what's in season and what's likely to save me even more money.

The same goes for buying my fresh fruit and vegetables.  At Adam Corbally's stall on Glossop Outdoor Market I can buy one tomato or 4 or 5 new potatoes and know I'm going to use them and that the quality is excellent.  If I want one banana, a couple of apples, an orange and a small bunch of grapes this is exactly what I get and nothing is going to be thrown away at the end of the week because I couldn't eat it all.

The cheese and cooked meat stall on Glossop Indoor Market will also go out of their way to ensure that I can buy their products in quantities that are right for me and they have a fantastic range to choose from, plus, I can taste before I buy so I know I'll like what I'm getting.

I can buy one bread roll if that's all I need from Glossop Indoor Market bread counter and there's a fantastic deli where I can treat myself to a few olives or a slice or two of deli meats.

I've got a bit of a sweet tooth which I can indulge at Gill and Kevins stall on Glossop Outdoor Market where they sell a great range of cakes, biscuits, sweets and other "naughty but nice" treats!  I can also buy my tea, coffee and soft drinks from them knowing that I'm paying well under supermarket prices for quality goods.  Many of their cakes are top of the range, big brand name seconds, they may be a little squashed in places but they still taste good and are very reasonably priced so I can treat myself and the grandchildren without breaking the bank!

I have to say that since I changed my shopping habits I'm also eating a lot better, wasting less and saving money which is great so why don't you give it a try too.

TODAY'S TASTY RECIPE IDEA

CHEESY BEEF BURGERS

This is a quick and simple recipe with loads of taste and is popular with both adults and children.

Serves 4

All you need is:-

1 lb. minced beef
Grated cheddar cheese - as much as you want.
A few shakes of Worcester Sauce
Seasoning to taste

Simply put the minced beef, the Worcester Sauce and the grated cheese into a bowl, season to taste and mix together well.  Form into burgers by taking as much of the mixture as you want and rolling it between your palms until it is a rough ball shape then squash it out to make your burger.  There’s no need to add a binding ingredient such as egg as the burgers will hold their shape during cooking because of the added cheese.

Fry, grill or barbecue, turning frequently until cooked through and nicely browned on the outside and serve them either on a bun or as part of your main meal with a selection of fresh salad or vegetables.

If you’re watching the calories you can substitute the cheese for a low fat variety.

If you want to ring the changes, try substituting the cheddar with blue stilton or any other cheese of your choice.  Or turn them into meatballs and serve with fresh tomato sauce over a bed of pasta.

Next Saturday the Glossop Outdoor Market will be playing host to the Local Produce Market which will run alongside the regular market.  As well as all of our regular traders there will be the casual traders who attend the market once a month with a selection of things which are produced locally.  Some of these traders stood our Jubilee Market and enjoyed the day so much they are eager to come back again to enjoy the fantastic atmosphere that we have on Glossop Outdoor Market the whole year round.

Whatever you're shopping for you'll find it on Glossop Outdoor Market so why not make us part of your regular weekend shopping routine and let us help you to save money and still get fantastic quality goods and produce.

GET YOUR APRON'S ON, IT'S TIME TO COOK!

I am so excited to be able to share some of my favourite recipes with you all that I couldn't wait until tomorrow to get started.  I hope you enjoy this, it really is worth the extra effort to make your own cheese sauce as it tastes so much better than ready made ones.  If you want copies of any of the recipes leave a comment and I will print them off for you to collect from me at Glossop Outdoor Market.  You can find me in the book cabin every Friday and Saturday.

CAULIFLOWER CHEESE

This recipe is for a day when you have a little bit of extra time on your hands as I am going to teach you the secret of making a perfect cheese sauce from scratch.  If your family doesn’t like cauliflower you can substitute it for broccoli or a selection of seasonal vegetables of your choice.

Serves 4

1 cauliflower - or vegetables of your choice
12 ounces of extra strong cheddar cheese
1 heaped tablespoon plain flour
1 ounce of butter or butter substitute (check before you add this that it will melt as not all of the low fat spreads will do this)
Approximately ¾ pint of milk
¼ teaspoon ready made English mustard
Seasoning to taste

Prepare your cauliflower by cutting into bite sized chunks and place it into a saucepan of water to which you have added a dash of salt.  Bring it to the boil and cook until nearly done.  This should take approximately 7 to 10 minutes but you will need to keep an eye on it as you don’t want to overcook it.

Whilst your cauliflower is cooking you are going to make your sauce.  First you will need to grate your cheese and put it to one side.

Melt your butter in a medium sized saucepan taking care not to burn it.  Add your flour to the butter and stir continuously until it turns golden and begins to “sizzle” around the edges.  Remove the saucepan from the heat and add the milk a little at a time.  I find it helps to use a whisk to combine the butter/flour with the milk as this prevents lumps from forming.  Once you have added all of the milk return the pan to the heat and bring to the boil, stirring constantly - still using your whisk.  As soon as the mixture boils and thickens remove the pan from the heat and add the mustard (this helps to bring out the full flavour of the cheese).  Then add the cheese, retaining a little to sprinkle over the top, a little at a time and stir well.  Once all the cheese is added you can taste your sauce and adjust the seasoning to taste.  Don’t return the pan to the heat as the cheese will go stringy if you do so.

Drain your cauliflower well, put it into an ovenproof dish and pour the cheese sauce over the top.  Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top too.  Pop it into a medium oven until it is nicely browned on top, this should take about 30 minutes but do check it as all ovens differ slightly.

Serve with some nice sausages for a tasty mid week meal which the whole family will enjoy.  This also goes well with pork chops which you can cook in the oven at the same time as the cauliflower cheese.

SHOPPERS CHALLENGE

We're challenging you to cut the cost of your weekly shop by up to 30% by shopping at Glossop Market instead of a big supermarket chain store.  Everybody knows that we're in the middle of the worst recession for many years and at times like this we all need to watch the pennies and make the most of what money we have.  Research has shown that you can save up to 30% on your shopping bill by shopping at markets where there are bargains galore.  So we'd like to challenge you to swap the convenience and "free parking" - which is actually costing you up to 30 pence for every pound you spend - for just one week and shop at your local market instead.

No doubt you're asking if you can get everything you need to feed your family for the week from our markets.  The answer is a big resounding YES and I'll even be posting recession busting recipes for main meals every day this week, starting tomorrow, using ingredients that I've bought from the traders at Glossop Outdoor and Indoor Market Complex and telling you which stalls to buy the ingredients from.

I hope you're up for the challenge because I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the money you can save every week by shopping with us.  Some of our stall holders even provide a "carry to your car or home delivery" service too, and unlike the large supermarket chains, this service is free of charge!
