Glossop Outdoor Market is a small, local authority run market in the High Peak of Derbyshire and there has been a market in Glossop for hundreds of years. As far as we know the original market was held in Old Glossop where locals used to sell butter around the old market cross. We are unsure of the exact date that the market ceased to trade in Old Glossop but we do know when it opened in it's present location.
The following is an extract from a document about the market being established.
"A market has been established under an act of parliament in the 7th year of the reign of Queen Victoria by the lord of the manor, which was opened 19th July, 1845. The market, held on Saturday, progresses very well, and presents an animated appearance in the evening."
There has been a market on this site ever since and we intend to uphold the tradition for many years to come.
