LOVE YOUR LOCAL MARKET

Calling all potential market traders.  Come and join us at Glossop Outdoor Market and try your hand during the 1st National Love your Local Market campaign which runs until 8th July.  Buy and try a stall for a tenner.

Glossop Outdoor Market is where Adam Corbally started out at the age of 19 and we are all very proud of what he's achieved with his hard work and positive attitude.  Now we're inviting potential traders to come and have a go too, you never know where it will take you.  Many multi-national businesses started out as market stalls, Marks and Spencer was just one of them and Lord Sugar stood the markets as a young man too so with the right attitude and determination there is a lot to be said for starting off as a market trader.

To find out more about becoming a trader on Glossop Outdoor Market send an email to

markets@highpeak.gov.uk or visit the High Peak website.

WORK EXPERIENCE AT GLOSSOP OUTDOOR MARKET

A trader from Glossop Outdoor Market met with Glossop Jobcentre Plus this morning to talk about providing work experience placements on the market for anyone who feels that this would be a good career for them.  If you're unemployed and interested in starting your own small business, a market stall is an ideal place to begin and by doing work experience at the market first you will be able to find out if it's something you will enjoy doing.  Plus, you will be learning from traders who have years of experience and are passionate about what they do!  The traders of Glossop Outdoor Market have got together to provide anyone who comes to us on a placement with a total "market" experience and you'll learn everything you need to know about trading to enable you to set up and run a successful stall of your own.

If you're interested in learning more all you need to do is ask your Jobcentre advisor and they'll do the rest.

LOVE YOUR LOCAL MARKET FORTNIGHT

Buy and try a stall on Glossop's markets

FIRST timers will be allowed to experience what it is like to run their own market stall for a day later this month.
To encourage young people and new business start-ups in the market trade as part of National Markets Day and Love Your Local Market fortnight, High Peak Borough Council is offering new first-time traders a trestle stall for a day for only £10, subject to conditions and availability.
Cllr Godfrey Claff, portfolio holder for regeneration, said: ”This could be your first step in market trading! Glossop is a popular market town and, with the extra national promotion of the fortnight, you will have many potential customers to sell to. All you need to succeed is a product or service, a passion and a commitment to quality and customer service”.
Following the Mary Portas review last December which highlighted the importance of markets to the high street, the Love Your Local Market fortnight is being led by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA) with the support of the National Market Traders’ Federation (NMTF).
The council will provide a ready-erected trestle stall for just £10 - and the NMTF will provide free public liability insurance for the day to booked stall holders, a mandatory requirement for all market traders.
All you need to do is to apply, get confirmation and then turn up on the day with £10 and your products, ready to sell.
To secure a stall, please email your full contact details and what you would like to sell to:markets@highpeak.gov.uk. Stalls and dates during the fortnight are subject to availability.

LOVE YOUR LOCAL MARKET FORNIGHT ADAMS TOP 10 TIPS FOR SUCCESS

1) The early bird catches the worm. Get there early, get set up and be prepared.
2) Get the best pitch. As crazy as this may sounds, always pitch near the toilet or the cafe, people generally visit both on a market, if you're near them you'll get the footfall. If you are casual then get the best pitch you can and then you can always work your way up, respect that some traders will have been there for years.
3) Setting up to sell. Always judge your pitch from 25ft away, not stood at it. If it doesn't look right from afar, people won't feel invited to have a look around.
4) There is no such thing as bad weather, it's just not dressing for bad weather. Wrap up and always have waterproofs at the ready. A comfy trader is a happy trader. Don't forget about the good weather either, sunhat and sun screen are a must, people forget that the English sun is the same as the Spanish sun.
5) Float. Never overlook the importance of having a healthy float at the start of the day, if you start running around looking for change, you will lose sales.
6) Things to remember: Bungee cords (You will see what I mean once you start trading), Bags (For customers to take away from the stall), Cash Till/Box/Pouch (You'll always need somewhere to keep your money).
7) Get your pricing right. People go to a market for a bargain, make sure you have everything priced clearly. I personally like a deal when I'm on a market, on the flip side I never walk away from a sale.
8) Sales. If you are selling something and you believe in it, you will sell it - trust me and remember to smile, smiles make sales. Simple!
9) Connect, talk to people - tales make sales, find common ground and relate to people. If people want a robot, they will go to a supermarket.
10) Network. Talk to other traders. Introduce yourself, give/receive "traders" discount, discuss other markets and learn from one another. Remember it is not what you do it's how you do it, and if you do it right you will get results.

LOVE YOUR LOCAL MARKET FORTNIGHT

If you've always wanted to become a market trader then now is the time to give it a try.  During Love your Local Market fortnight you can hire a stall for just £10.00 on Glossop Outdoor Market.  All you need to do is email

markets@highpeak.gov.uk

with you details and what you intend to sell and they will sort the rest out for you subject to availability and conditions.  You won't even need to get insurance to trade during this period as this is being provided free of charge by the NMTF for all suitable first time traders.

If you do take a stall during this period and decide that you would like to become a regular trader then there are a few things you need to do first.

The most important of these is setting yourself up with Public Liability Insurance as you won’t be able to trade unless you have it.  You can get this from various companies but most traders use the National Market Traders Federation.  You can find them online and once you have paid your yearly premium your insurance cover is instant.

Whilst we’re on the subject of insurance, you will also need to make sure that your car/van is insured for business use.  This can usually be added on to your regular insurance for a small premium.

What shall I sell?  For a first time trader we would advise you to think very carefully if you are going to sell “perishables”.  It takes time to become an established trader on any market and you don’t want to be out of pocket at the end of the day with a lot of stock that is going to perish before you trade again the following week.

Go and visit the market you would like to trade at and have a look around to see what others are selling to make sure that you are not wanting to sell the same items.  You will stand a much better chance of succeeding as a Market Trader if you are not duplicating what another trader in the same market is selling.  You may, also, not be allowed to trade if you are selling the same thing as someone else.

There are a few things you might want to take into consideration when you choose what to sell.

Will it fit into my car/van?

How heavy is it?  Remember, you will have to do an awful lot of loading and unloading in the course of your working day so choose something you know you can handle.

Is there anything else I’ll need?

You will need to have plastic sheeting or tarpaulin to protect your merchandise from the rain/snow.  Even though the majority of our market stalls are covered the wind can cause rain or snow to be blown onto the stalls so it is better to take precautions against your valuable stock getting ruined.

As market traders are out in all weathers it makes good sense to equip yourself with warm, waterproof clothing and shoes/boots for the winter months.

Once you’ve taken these things into consideration the next steps are simple:-

Choose a market
Contact it to find out what’s available
Register and apply to be a market trader

Choosing a Market

There are a few things you may want to think about when choosing which market you wish to trade on.

1. Location - do you wish to work close to home or would you like to
Travel to another location.

2. Trading Days - find out what days the market you are interested in
Standing is open - most of our markets trade on Friday and
Saturday but some are open on other days too so be sure to choose
One which can offer you the days you want.  Trading days will vary
throughout the country but most markets are open on a Saturday.

Contacting your chosen market to find out What’s Available

Nearly all markets in the UK can be found online so it should be quite easy to get hold of a contact number for the market of your choice.  If you can’t find them on the internet we suggest that you pop along to the market you would like to trade at and talk to one of the traders to find out who you need to contact about having a stall.

Registering and Applying to Become a Market Trader

This is your final step to becoming a Market Trader.  Once you have decided upon where you want to trade and spoken to the market manager/superintendent, you will need to fill out the relevant paperwork and hand it back.  You will also need to provide them with your insurance details for their records.

This is a leaflet that we put together for our own markets in conjunction with High Peak Council and we hope that you will find this information useful.  If you have any questions just leave us a comment and we'll do our best to be of help.

BARGAIN OF THE WEEK

This weeks bargain comes from Brian of Brian's Bargains on Glossop Outdoor Market.  All of the goods that Brian sells are bargains but we think you'll be particularly interested in this one.  From Saturday he will be selling Egyptian Cotton Sheets for just £8.00 each.  They will be available in either white or cream and he'll have them in all sizes right up to super king!

COOKING ON A BUDGET

If, like me, you're on a small budget, then it's important to make your money go as far as possible.  Today I'm cooking for the freezer and making a basic recipe that can be turned into 3 different meals with very little effort.

Depending on how many people you are aiming to feed you will need:-

2lbs of minced beef
3 onions
4 carrots
A handful of mushrooms
4 sticks of celery (optional)
bay leaves
plain flour
Beef stock cubes
Water
seasoning to taste
a little oil for frying

Dice all of your vegetables and fry them over a low heat until they are beginning to soften.  Add the mince and stir well to break up any lumps then fry until cooked through.  Remove your pan from the heat and stir in enough flour to absorb the fat, stirring continuously to prevent lumps from forming.  Return the pan to the heat and add enough water to give you a thick gravy.  Bring to the boil stirring all the time.  Add your stock cubes, bay leaves and season to taste.  Turn down the heat and allow to simmer for 30 to 45 minutes.  Once cooked allow the mixture to cool ready for freezing.  Don't forget to remove the bay leaves!   Divide the mixture between 3 containers and place in the freezer.

You now have the basis for 3 different meals.

With the addition of mashed potatoes you can turn one of your basic portions into a filling and tasty shepherds pie.  I like to sprinkle some grated cheese on the top of the potato for added flavour and serve it with a selection of seasonal vegetables.

Another way to use up one of your basic portions is to turn it into a pie.  You can either make your own pastry or use frozen or packet pastry.  Again, with the addition of some vegetables you have a tasty and nutritious meal for the family.

One of my favourite ways to use this mixture is to layer it with potato slices and pop it in the oven until the top layer of potatoes are golden brown and crispy and serve it with cabbage with has been lightly cooked so that it retains it's crisp texture.

All of the ingredients for your basic mixture can be obtained from Glossop Outdoor and Indoor Market where all of our traders are happy to help you eat well and save money.

EARLY MARKET IN GLOSSOP

In 1289 a charter was granted the monks the right to hold a market in Glossop each week. At first it was on Wednesdays, but it soon changed to Mondays; there was also a three day fair in July - traders might come from all over the north-west to that. The market and fair brought a certain amount of income for the monks in fees and fines, but would also bring more chance of prosperity to the people of the Glossop area by giving them the opportunity to buy and sell.
All over the country they developed sheep farming, and by the end of the middle ages England's wool was its chief export. The Basingwerk monks probably encouraged the people of Glossopdale to increase wool production too, making both monks and villagers richer.
Even so, it is likely that in 1500 and possibly even in 1600, there was only one stone building in the village building in the village

A BIT OF HISTORY FROM GLOSSOP OUTDOOR MARKET

Help Glossop Spitfire Fund - 1940

Collecting for the Spitfire fund at Glossop Market Ground in 1940.  The photograph is taken in front of the Municipal Building looking across Victoria Street towards the old mill.  What a wonderful turnout and how smart the mayor looked in his top hat!  It's interesting to see that nearly all of the men are wearing flat caps and that the majority of ladies are also wearing headgear.

TIME TO COOK WITH GLOSSOP OUTDOOR MARKET

Today we're making Leek and Potato soup, a tasty way to warm up when it's a bit chilly like today.  This is a quick and easy soup to make and with the addition of a cheese toasty and some crispy bacon bits sprinkled on top it makes a handy light meal for those times when you don't want a large meal.

All you need for this soup are:

2 large leeks
5 - 6 large potatoes
small amount of cooking oil for frying
1 tablespoon plain flour
stock (I use Knorr cubes and water)
salt and pepper to taste.

Slice your leeks thinly, put them into the colander and rinse them well under running water as leeks can get a bit gritty during the growing process.  Peel and dice your potatoes.  Heat up the cooking oil in a large saucepan and add the leeks.  Cook over a moderate heat, stirring frequently, until they're translucent.  You don't want to brown them as this spoils the colour of the finished soup.  Remove the pan from the heat and add the flour and stir it well then return the pan to the heat for a minute or two until the flour has absorbed all of the oil.  Remove the pan from the heat again and slowly add the stock (the amount will depend on how thick you want your finished soup) stirring all the time so that it doesn't go lumpy.  Once the stock has all been added you can toss in the potato cubes.  Bring the pan to the boil and then turn down the heat to a simmer.  Cook until the potatoes are soft.   Once the potatoes and leeks are soft remove the pan from the heat.  You are now going to need to use your food processor, "Billy blender" or a sieve in order to get a smooth soup.  If you don't have a food processor etc., you can always pass your soup through a sieve to achieve this.  It helps if you push the soup through the sieve with the back of a spoon.

Once you've got your soup to the smooth stage all you need to do is season it to taste and serve.

I like to have mine with some crispy bacon sprinkled on top and some nice crusty bread!  A sprinkle of grated cheese also goes well with leek and potato soup.

The vegetables I used in this soup were all bought from Adam Corbally on Glossop Outdoor Market and the other ingredients came from my store cupboard.

A WET AND WINDY DAY AT GLOSSOP OUTDOOR MARKET

As they say, today was fine weather for ducks, in fact if you look closely at the photograph you can see that one decided to take advantage of the market andis swimming in a puddle in front of the car.  Despite the awful weather conditions some of the locals turned out to do there shopping at today's combined market.  Amongst the regular traders there were also some of the monthly traders who attend the Local Produce Markets.  Due to the weather conditions some of the casual traders closed early which was a shame as the rain stopped for a while in the afternoon and locals took advantage of this to pop down to do their shopping.

NATIONAL MARKET DAY

National Market Day 2012 is actually going to be running over a 2 week period  from 23rd June to 8th July and over 200 markets in the United Kingdom have signed up to take part, including, of course Glossop Outdoor Market.  Once again High Peak Council and traders are doing all they can to make our contribution to this event one which you will all enjoy.  We'll keep you all updated about what will be taking place at Glossop Outdoor Market and which day we're going to be hosting this event.  We can promise that we will have a full market and entertainment laid on for everyone to enjoy.

If there are any first time traders out there who would like to have a stall, get in touch with our Market Superintendent, Kay Gore on 07794768495 who will have all the details about how to take part in this event.

TODAY'S PRICE CHECK FROM GLOSSOP OUTDOOR MARKET

Gill and Kevin have so many bargains that we really don't know where to start!  Amongst them are 2 bottles of brand named Dandelion and Burdock for £1.00 (r.r.p. 79p each) and 2 M & S Victoria Sponge Cakes £1.00 (on the M & S website these sell for over £10 each!).  You'll need to get here early as there's always a long queue at this stall as everything is such a bargain and the vast majority of the products they sell are top branded goods.  A great place to shop if you have a sweet tooth as they always have a massive selection of cakes and biscuits on sale as well as staples such as \Yorkshire tea and Nescafe coffee.

COMBINED MARKET THIS SATURDAY

We're joined once again this Saturday at Glossop Outdoor Market by our friends from the monthly Local Produce Market.  The Local Produce Market is held once a month in conjunction with the regular market on the 2nd Saturday of the month and you can buy a massive variety of locally produced foodstuffs and artisan wares from the casual traders who attend.

This Saturday we have a new trader attending who will be selling bags - all of the artwork featured on these bags has been painted by ELEPHANTS!  Yes, ELEPHANTS.  The Asian elephants who do the artwork live at a sanctuary and spend a few hours a week painting which we are told they really enjoy.  All of the proceeds from the bags goes towards the upkeep of the sanctuary, medicines and ensuring that Asian elephants do not die out as they are in danger of doing  in this part of the world.  We'll have pictures for you of some of the artwork and the painting elephants soon.

We're also happy to welcome back Val who stood her first market last weekend and loved it so much she asked to come back again!  Val sells a fantastic selection of jewellery which she makes herself and it was very popular at our Jubilee Market so if you didn't manage to make it down last Saturday come on down this weekend and treat yourselves to something from Val's stall.  All of her jewellery is very reasonably priced and exceptionally well made and comes boxed too which makes it ideal to give as a gift.

All of our regular traders will be here this weekend too with lots of bargains which we hope you won't be able to resist.

CHEESE AND ONION PIE

Serves 4

For the pastry crust:

12 ounces of flour
6 ounces of  cooking fat cut into small cubes
Pinch of salt
Water to mix

(Or you could substitute either frozen shortcrust pastry or a packet mix if you are short of time).

Put the flour into a bowl and add the cooking fat and salt.  Rub the fat into the flour until your mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.  Add enough cold water to make a stiff dough mix well.  Cover and put into the fridge to rest for half an hour or while you prepare your filling.

For the filling

12 ounces of mature cheddar cheese
2 large onions
1 tablespoon plain flour
¼ teaspoon English Mustard powder or ready made mustard
1 ounce of butter or margarine
About 2 fluid ounces of milk
Seasoning to taste

Firstly you will need to skin and chop your onions, you can either dice them or slice them, whichever your family prefers.  Melt the butter or margarine in a heavy based saucepan and throw in the diced or sliced onions.  Cook until transparent, stirring well - be careful not to brown them as this spoils the look of the pie filling.  Once your onions are cooked, remove your pan from the heat and stir in the plain flour.  Return to the hob and cook until the mixture is bubbling around the edges then remove again from the heat.  Add the milk, you will have a very thick mixture but don’t worry about this as it what you are aiming for.  Heat gently to warm the mixture through and then remove from the heat.  Add the cheese, mustard and seasoning and stir well.  Your filling mixture will look a bit lumpy at this stage but will smooth out when your pie is cooked and will give you a rich and creamy filling.

Divide your pastry into two pieces and roll them out remembering to dust your pastry board or work top with extra flour to prevent it sticking!  Line your pie dish with one of your pastry pieces and spoon your filling on top.  Brush around the edges of the pastry with cold water and place the reserved piece of pastry on to the top to form the lid.  Press down well around the edges, I use one of my fingers to do this which not only seals the pie crust but gives it a bit of a fancy edge too.  Glaze the top of your pie with milk or a mixture of milk and water.  Cut a couple of holes into the lid to let out the steam so that the pastry stays nice and crisp when it’s cooking and you’re ready to put the finished pie into the oven.  I use a medium oven for cooking most things and this is no exception.  Place the pie into the middle of a medium oven and cook for approximately 45 minutes or until the pastry is crisp and golden brown.

This is a really filling meal and needs nothing other than green vegetables or baked beans to complete it.  A bit time consuming but so much better than ready made!
